This collection of photographs and interviews tell a story of the power of community and of what has been accomplished through mutual aid in WNC. The farms represented are located in Asheville, Fairview, Leicester, and Marion. Every farm I visited was so welcoming and open to sharing their knowledge, experience, and harvest. I could truly feel the solidarity and learned so much spending time in community with these amazing individuals.  

They represent agricultural non-profits and businesses led by multi-generational, ancestral, and community-based wisdom. As a community we hold so much knowledge and power, it is our responsibility to continue learning our ancestral practices and also pass on this knowledge to future generations.

Esta colección de fotografías y entrevistas narra la historia del poder de la comunidad y de los logros alcanzados mediante el apoyo mutuo en el oeste de Carolina del Norte (WNC). Las granjas representadas se encuentran en Asheville, Fairview, Leicester y Marion. En todas las granjas que visité me recibieron con gran calidez y apertura, compartiendo sus conocimientos, experiencias y cosechas. Realmente pude sentir la solidaridad y aprendí muchísimo al compartir tiempo en comunidad con estas personas extraordinarias.

Las imagenes representan organizaciones agrícolas sin fines de lucro y empresas guiadas por una sabiduría ancestral, comunitaria y transmitida de generación en generación. Como comunidad, poseemos un gran conocimiento y poder; es nuestra responsabilidad seguir aprendiendo nuestras prácticas ancestrales y transmitir este saber a las futuras generaciones.

Biography

I am a Mexican artist with a passion for story telling, culture, and nature. I am from Veracruz, Mexico. As a child, my parents instilled in me a love for nature, especially for plants.  Growing up, I would see my father Jacinto and my mother Simona build their home from the ground up, taking care of the house, the yard, and our family. Lots of hard work went into it. We had a nanche tree (which I would climb) which would give us so much fresh fruit that we would share with all our neighbors. We had an avocado tree, elderberry tree (which I would also climb, the neighboring kids would make monkey noises at me, that made me happy). My parents also planted cilantro. I still remember how beautiful it looked growing from the dirt and the care my father took to nurture it. They grew all kinds of plants and this made me love them and the Earth forever. I dedicate this project to them – it is because of them that I continue to love learning about the Earth and the abundance it offers us if we nurture it and love it. 

Artist Statement 

My work centers around community, my Mexican roots, environmental conservation, and BIPOC stories. I work in a variety of media including painting, printmaking, photography, and bead work. I also teach creative practices and environmental topics. In everything I do, I use art as a tool to educate and communicate ideas and stories, whether it is my story or that of another person who has trusted me to tell theirs. I use my work as a catalyst for action to conserve, protect, and listen to nature and human beings. My culture and nature are my main inspirations to create pieces full of color and love

Biografía

Soy una artista Mexicana apasionada por la narración de historias, la cultura y la naturaleza. Soy originaria de Veracruz, México. Desde niña, mis padres me inculcaron el amor por la naturaleza, especialmente por las plantas. Mientras crecía, veía a mi padre, Jacinto, y a mi madre, Simona, construir nuestro hogar desde los cimientos y cuidar de la casa, el jardín y nuestra familia; fue una labor que requirió mucho esfuerzo. Teníamos un árbol de nanche (al que solía trepar) que nos daba tanta fruta fresca que la compartimos con todos los vecinos. También teníamos un aguacate y un saúco (al que también me subía; los niños vecinos me hacían ruidos de chango, algo que me divertía). Mis padres también plantaban cilantro. Aún recuerdo lo hermoso que se veía brotando de la tierra y el esmero con el que mi padre lo cuidaba. Cultivaban todo tipo de plantas, y esto hizo que yo los amará a ellos y a la Tierra para siempre. Dedico este proyecto a ellos; gracias a ellos sigo amando aprender sobre la Tierra y la abundancia que nos ofrece si la cuidamos y la amamos.

Declaración artística

Mi obra se centra en la comunidad, mis raíces Mexicanas, la conservación del medio ambiente y las historias de personas negras, indígenas y de color (BIPOC). Trabajo con diversos medios, como la pintura, el grabado, la fotografía y el trabajo con cuentas (abalorios). También imparto talleres sobre prácticas creativas y temas medioambientales. En todo lo que hago, utilizo el arte como herramienta para educar y comunicar ideas e historias, ya sea la mía propia o la de otra persona que ha confiado en mí para contar la suya. Utilizo mi trabajo como catalizador para la acción: conservar, proteger y escuchar tanto a la naturaleza como a los seres humanos. Mi cultura y la naturaleza son mis principales fuentes de inspiración para crear obras llenas de color y amor.
