Welcome to another edition of “Meet Artist of the Month.” I am so excited to introduce September’s artist. I have known her for several years and have witnessed her exciting art journey. She has an eclectic style, conveying themes such as immigration, nature, and motherhood. Meet Zuleyma Castrejon! I interviewed her this month to learn more about her inspiration. Read more below and check out some of her pieces available for purchase.

You can follow her on IG @zuleyma_creativestudio to see more of her work.

Carolina: What inspires your work?

Zuleyma: My art is inspired by my Mexican culture. I am inspired by the vibrant, bold colors of our traditional textiles. My current body of work is inspired by my journey into motherhood and the joys of experiencing motherhood for the first time.

Carolina: What’s your cultural background?

Zuleyma: I am from the beautiful Mexican state of Guerrero, but grew up in Monroe, NC. I came to the US at the age of 2 and have been here ever since. I am currently a DACA recipient, but hope to visit my motherland one day.

Carolina: What are your hobbies outside of art?

Zuleyma: Outside of art I like exploring other crafts that wouldn’t necessarily fall into the fine art category. I also find a lot of joy teaching workshops, going to the pool with my son, cooking, and watching crime documentaries.
